This rare three dimensional fossil crab nodule is in very good condition and comes out from the Pacific Northwest. They are part of the Lincoln Creek Formation. It is over 32 Million years old and it is very rare to see on come out this clean with its shell and claws. I love finding pieces this perfect and giving them a new life. I can just visualize the little creature crawling around on the beach near the water so many years ago. I am constantly amazed when specimens that are so perfectly formed. I used sterling wire to wrap it and attached it to a fossil harpoon from the tundras to hand it from. And the chain is handwoven sterling viking knit. The tiny beads are turritella which is a fossil with brown matrix and tiny cream colored shells within the matrix.

The pendant including the bail is is 2.5" long and wide. The sterling woven chain is 18" long and it closes with a sterling lobster clasp. This is truly a stunning piece and a conversation piece as well.

Among the world’s best-preserved crab fossils are those occurring in western Washington state. Generally the crabs quickly fall apart after death. So for these crabs to be found is so fine a state of preservation in a rarity. They must have been buried soon after death. The crabs are found in concretions along the sides of creeks and beds of local streams. Painstaking work and long hours are required to prepare them. This Pulalius is an excellent example of a fully prone dorsal specimen. Six of the 10 appendages can be seen. In this case, they are ominously lifelike.

Science and Myth

Crabs are strong lunar symbols, and we see the crab's connection with the moon astrologically, esoterically and universally. For example, the crab is featured in the Tarot where a crab (or sometimes a lobster or crayfish) is indicated on the Moon card and enhances the overall symbolism this card represents. Indeed, the moon symbolically serves as a matronly guardian of the crab, and oversees its well being amidst its watery world. More about moon and its symbolism can be found here.

Astrologically, the sign of Cancer carries the symbol of the crab. More about this intriguing sign can be found here.

Crabs cast off their shells for new ones, and this is where the rebirth/cycling association plays its part.

The protective animal symbolism is evident in the hard, spiny exo-skeleton found with these creatures.

When the crab crawls into our consciousness we're reminded of the cyclical nature in our lives and what protection we may need for the path on which we embark.

The Crab signifies prosperity, success and high status in Chinese symbolism because the Chinese word referring to its shell is a pun on the term used for the highest score a candidate can make on the Chinese Imperial Examinations (first, or jia). Two crabs represent the first and second scores of the Examinations.

Whether the effects of stones and crystals such as this are real or merely a placebo effect is unknown. All we know for certain is that the use of gemstones in healing goes back centuries. And we know that modern science has discovered some surprising applications for the unique properties of certain crystals as all stones and crystals are made up of the same things that make up our bodies!
